A Guide to Food Allergies- Surviving the Reactions

June 2nd, 2010 by admin

If you find that you are allergic to certain kinds of beverages and foods, then you will have to exercise selective eating. Sometimes our body has a negative immunologic reaction in the presence of certain food proteins.

Today, several reading material is available on the topic of food allergy that can help you understand everything you need to know about food allergies. ” Five Years without Food” is one such book that helps you survive food allergies. This book will give you an overview on allergic foods as well as alternatives to foods that you cannot and can eat. In addition to all this, the book also suggests the necessary treatment for food allergy. Furthermore, the author makes a personal testimonial in the book making it credible.

Apart from all the information available in this book, there are some facts that you should keep in mind regarding food allergy.

Usually, adults develop allergies to food items such as tree nuts, eggs, shellfish, fish and peanuts. Kids, usually get allergies to milk, eggs and peanuts. If you suspect that you have food allergy, the first thing you need to do is gain as much knowledge regarding the allergy as possible. In doing this, you will be equipping yourself to recover and overcome such allergies.

At this point, we shall discuss some important food allergies, their symptoms, and the alternative foods corresponding to them.

Egg allergy

Usually people suffering from this kind of allergies are hypersensitive to all foods that contain components of eggs- the yolk or the white.

Usually, for a definite period of time, you will have to restrict the consumption of food items that contain eggs. Nowadays, there are many egg substitutes available in the market such as potato starch and tapioca. Another alternative is apple sauce.

Nut Allergy

Some people experience allergic attacks due to over sensitivity to tree nuts. Peanut allergy and nut allergy should not be confused for each other. They are different as tree nuts are actually dry fruits.

If you need to restrict tree nuts in your diet, you can try consuming food items made from soy nuts as an alternative. Soy nuts are not actually nuts; they are just soaked and baked soybean that is crisp.

Milk Allergy

Many people develop allergies when they ingest cow milk protein. This means that the individual is allergic to milk.

In order to make the best of your milk allergy treatment, milk allergens must be avoided entirely. The alternative foods that can give you the nutrition from milk include rice milk or soy milk.

Seafood Allergy

If your body reacts negatively to foods like flaky fishes or shellfish, then you suffer from seafood allergy.

The best way to prevent the attack of allergies is by restraining your consumption of shellfish and other fishes that you might be allergic to. Also exercise caution while purchasing pre packaged food items for many such products do not specify if its ingredients include sea food particles like fish.

You should rigorously exercise selective eating if you suffer from food allergies. Selective eating effectively eliminates any allergic reaction taking place in your system. In this way you will recover from and survive food allergies. This will also cease food allergies to a certain extent. However, selective eating varies. There are some food allergies that can be treated for a short period of time, while others have no treatment whatsoever.

Food Allergy

May 23rd, 2010 by admin

Food allergies happen when your immune system messes up. Your immune system is supposed to protect you from disease and germs. If you have a food allergy your immune system makes a mistake and thinks the food is going to harm you.

The response is the same whether it is a food allergy, an allergy to medicine, an allergy to a flower or tree, or an allergy to peanuts. Although the foods themselves are not harmful the reaction the body has can be life threatening.

In recent years we have heard a lot about the peanut food allergy mainly because the reaction is usually very severe leading to anaphylactic shock.

Here’s what can happen if a child or adult for that matter eats a peanut topped brownie which they have a food allergy to – the antibodies in the body over react releasing histamine in the blood.

The histamine released eyes, throat, nose, respiratory, skin, and even the digestive system can be affected by the food allergy. The reaction could be mild or severe and it can happen almost right away or a couple of hours later.

Some of the first signs of a person suffering from a food allergy can be a runny nose, hives, itchy skin, tingling lips or tongue. Other signs can include tightness in the throat, hoarse voice, coughing, wheezing, stomach pain, diarrhea, and nausea or vomiting.

And with a serious food allergy anaphylaxis occurs which is a severe allergic reaction that comes on suddenly and with several serious problems all occurring at once – the heart, digestive system, respiratory all react at the same time and the breathing tube narrows while the tongue swells making breathing difficult if not impossible – this is a medical emergency.

If you have a serious food allergy and not necessarily to peanuts you need to make sure you know exactly what you are eating. If there is any doubt don’t eat it. You might also carry the proper medication with you.

Kids often suffer from milk and eggs but the often will outgrow these. Severe allergies are commonly seen in peanuts, shrimp, and fish and these do not usually disappear with age.

Not sure how to tell if you have a food allergy? Sometimes it’s pretty easy to figure out. Hives may appear or perhaps stomach problems occur. But other times it’s harder to tell. And sometimes even if you know you have a food allergy determining to what can be really difficult.

Many medical professionals believe that allergies are genetic and inherited so if you have a parent that suffers from hay fever you can expect to do so yourself. Food allergies can resolve themselves over time.

It is important that you do not confuse a food allergy with food intolerance such as with lactose intolerance which can cause severe stomach pain and diarrhea. But that doesn’t make it an allergy.

For some food allergies it’s as simple as not eating the food anymore. Other food allergies are harder to diagnose and harder to avoid. You should see a doctor that specializes in allergies. The doctor will ask you a lot of questions to help determine if you have a food allergy.

A liquid extract of the food or foods that are suspect is used to determine the food allergy. A tiny scratch is made on the skin and then a drop of the extract placed on the scratch. The doctor will watch for the development of a red spot which will indicate you have a food allergy to that particular food.

Once a food allergy is determined the doctor will decide on the best course of action and whether treatment is needed. Once you know what your allergy is it becomes much easier to deal with.

Have 8 year old girl with ADD, has anyone out there conquered this without medication?

May 5th, 2010 by admin

My daughter has very obvious ADD and I know if I go to the Doctor she will get put on meds. If I don’t resolve this very quickly (a few weeks) I’ll go ahead and do it so I don’t need any preaching about putting her on medication.

My problem is that there are millions of kids on this medication and I KNOW there has to be a reason for it. All of these kids are not ‘abnormal.’

If anyone has successfully done any home-treatment plan. Please tell me all about it. My little girl has enough of a tough time with her fructose intolerance, peanut & nut allergies and cat, dog & horse allergies too. This is SO the last thing she needs.

Please help.

I have had success with out meds. It is a lot of work. You should go to the doctor and get the diagnosis because that will help you to get her school to help in areas that she may struggle in. What worked for my family was to cut all red dye out of our child’s diet. Also you need to have a lot of patience. If it affects her behavior then what I found to work is to show them what they are doing wrong. And you will have to go over the same things over and over but with time and patience it will all work out. I don’t believe in using the pills unless it is severly affecting their school work. Also I have a cousin who took meds for a couple years and eventually was able to be weaned off them and do well in school. Sometimes once they have a higher maturity level they will be able to tell you what works best for them. If you decide to to the meds make sure to ask her how they make her feel. There are a lot of different ones out there and they affect each kids differently.
