Im Allergic

I want to get a food allergy blood test that tests for over 100 known foods that typically cause allergies. Whats the name of the test specifically so I can request it from my doctor? Also I usually get other testing done at the same time so I need to make sure that not too much blood is drawn at once.

there are so many. since you won’t have to worry about ordering the test yourself, let the allergist fill out the lab requisition form.

Say your pup has been itching, etc and has been diagnosed with an allergy to chicken. So you put him on a lamb food, and all is well. He finishes his CH easily, passes the working instinct test with flying colors, has great OFA, CERF, etc scores.

Do you breed him, even though he has an allergy to chicken?

That is a very good question. Allergies are now recognized to have a heritable trait and because they do impact the quality of life and can be expensive to diagnose and treat, they are something a breeder needs to carefully consider before breeding.

Keep in mind that unless your dog has been tested for specific allergies, the diagnosis may not be correct, so it wouldn’t be wise to eliminate the dog based on a vet’s guess work rather than an actual test.

I’ve had the skin prick test done before that let me know i was allergic to cats, horses etc.. What will a food allergy test tell me? I just started eating veggies and fruits for the first time and started to break out on my face, neck, and chest. So basically will the test say " mike dont eat broccoli lol …

Yeah there are a few types of tests for food
-skin prick
-vega
-blood test
I have had them all and the skin prick is the conventional doctors test and they will basically tell you just to avoid the allergen.
The other two are more homeopathic tests and if you talk to a regular doctor they will not support them. I found the vega (electrical currents) to be not very accurate but some people swear by it. Apparently with the blood test the results can vary day to day but I would still say this is more accurate than the vega and since it’s done by naturopaths they don’t just give you a dead end. There are treatments they can do to help ease the allergies and let you eat them at least sometimes if not all the time.

I know that you can develop a food allergy as an adult, but is it likely to develop into a severe one (like one that requires an Epipen or is potentially fatal) in your 20′s or 30′s? Or are severe allergies usually present from childhood? Thanks.

Yes. It is possible. All allergy reactions depend on your immune system. However, if you have severe allergy then you should carry an Epipen anytime and anywhere. You can almost seen this to people who have anaphylaxis.

What prescription allergy meds are gelatin free?

For the most part, any medicines that are in a gel casing or have gel caps are going to have gelatin in them (some may have gelatin in the interior but I don’t know).

Since you are asking about prescription meds and not OTC, most people in this topic probably won’t know which ones are gelatin free–you’re best off asking a doctor because they prescribe the medicines all the time and know what the medicines look like, thus they would let you know which ones are gel capsules

So I’m 18 years old and I’m breaking out really bad. It’s not like regular acne…its like red spots everywhere and pimples. But anyways, I don’t eat greasy foods, in fact I’m a vegetarian so I eat pretty healthy. I don’t know whats causing this abnormal acne. So I was wondering if it is something I’m eating maybe gluten or milk? I never had these problems when I was little so…is it possible to develop a food allergy?

yes it is possible. It is also possible that you have been allergic to something in the background from childhood.

The rash is complicated because so many things can cause one including certain diseases. You should definitely have some good tests done including allergy testing. Gluten or milk, I would think you would have some sort of g.i. symptoms as well. Most people do. Not always, but most of the time.

Two things to rule out. Are you taking any medication? Even if youve taken it for a year or so, you could develop side effects.
Since its skin related, are you using anything different such as soaps
perfume? Bedding, sheets, clothes?

Does the rash start anywhere in particular? More focused around your head and shoulders? legs?

If you question anything, like drugs, or a cosmetic, try eliminating it for awhile and see if you can figure this out.

I recently spontaneously got a tattoo unaware of the fact that there is nickel in tattoo ink. I am VERY allergic to nickel, if I were going to have a reaction would I have had one by now? It’s been 24 hours since I got it and it doesn’t itch in the least bit. Thanks.

Many people with severe nickel allergies successfully get tattoos. When things like that are described in tattoo ink, we are talking about PPM…parts per million. Also, these are general reports found on various sites report such things as mercury in reds, etc., which has not been used for many many years. Read them with caution as they are not correct. You should be fine.

Has anybody ever heard of a food allergy that would make you itch? If so, what is it usually caused by?
I think yesterday I might have eaten something (although I don’t know what) and I’ve been itching all over ever since.

Unfortunately many foods and some drugs can cause a general itch all over. poeomoe2003 has described the symptoms very well.

Right down what you eat for the day, anything that you would not normally eat, may have caused the symptoms you describe.

Typical foods that cause allergic reactions are;
Egg whites
Fish
Peanuts
Wheat
Milk
other things could be additives, colourings, flavour enhancers.

Then there is the allergic reactions to duck/horse dander, cat & dog fur and dust etc, and even something as simple as washing powder/soaps, perfumes, cleansers and moisturizers, and a ton of other things.

Allergies should never be taken lightly, and if these symptoms continue you should see your doctor for a referral to a specialist, who will do some testing. Tip if you do have to see an allergist do keep a food diary, as this may help pin point what is going on.

I’ve had a cat for at least 8 years and I’ve never had a problem. This week I bought a kitten and it seems like I can’t stop sneezing and I get a runny nose a lot of times when I’m around it.
Is it possible to be allergic to kittens but not cats?? And do you ever just get used to it or outgrow it or something?

When I was doing shelter adoptions I learned that people are usually NOT allergic to kittens and we would have returns for re-homing when the kitten was about a year old as that was when the allergies would kick in.

So, based on that, I think you might look into some allergen other than the kitten. I have never been bothered with allergies of any kind and this particular year I seem to have some.
