How to deal with a mold allergy?

January 31st, 2010 by admin

So I have never had any allergies before, and recently I started getting some symptoms like rashes on my eyelids and A LOT of sneezing and a runny nose. So I started taking claritin thinking it was hayes fever or something. Then I discovered one of my old purses that has been hanging on a hook on the door had mold on it. Last time I wore it was like a month ago so im not sure where the mold came from. I hang a lot of stuff on that door and I washed everything and the purse, the allergies went away for a while and now they are coming back. I am pretty sure that is it because when ever I leave my house I feel better. It sucks. I don’t know weather their could be mold somewhere random where I can’t see it? please help! I live in a studio and I am afraid this could be seriously damaging my health, how can I deal with this? should I throw the stuff on that door out? How fast does mold spread? I am even starting to get some chest pains I really don’t know how to fix this. Thank you so much.

Mold needs two things to grow:

1 – Organic matter, of which any home has plenty and there is no way you can get rid of it.

2- High levels of moisture. Mold needs at least 60% relative humidity to grow. Now, that is something you can definitely control in your house.

First look around that closet and all around the apartment for for sources of moisture. Damp walls, leaks in the plumbing, roof, holes in the siding or around window sills.

You live in an apartment complex, so there is also a chance the moisture is being caused by a leakage in an adjacent unit, so ask around and see if your neighbors have mold problems.

If there is no leakage, your probably live in a humid area. Buy an inexpensive hygrometer and check the Relative Humidity Levels around the house.

Chances are, you will get RH readings at or above 60%. You will need to buy and run a dehumidifier to control moisture in the house.

As soon as you lower and keep the RH levels down to around 50% all the mold will dry out, and no longer release spores in the air. The mold spores are what makes people sick.

Once the air is dehumidified, wipe the moldy areas clean with a bleach solution, and discard every organic and porous surface that still has mold spots on it. I am afraid that will include the purse you mentioned as well as some items in that closet.

If you do not dehumidify and control the moisture, what will happen is just what you observed, the symptoms will subside for a while, but the mold will grow back and the symptoms will return.

I have a son who is allergic to mold, so I really know how miserable these allergies make you feel.

What are the symptoms for food allergy, and what could these little red spots be?

January 31st, 2010 by admin

I do have an appointment tomorow for myself that I made so my daughter can be checked because she got these little red dots on her body(arms, chest, back, neck and a bit on her forhead, her legs seem unaffected yet, she is 8 months old, also what are the symptoms of food allergy so I can rule that out. Leading up to this rash for two days she had been quite tired then the next day bucked up now this morning when I went to change her from her pajamas was this rash, please help me out if you could- if you may have had a similar experience with your little one.

Are they bumpy or flat? I’m thinking heat rash. It is getting hotter each day and babies sweat as a result producing heat rash. An allergy would show up on the face around the mouth, would make her bottom red raw looking, cause irritation or discomfort, diarrhea or a runny nose. Does she have any of that? If you introduced a new food prior to the reaction it could be an allergy. If there are no other symptoms I do think it’s heat rash.

How do I reduce or even get rid of my cat allergy symptoms?

January 31st, 2010 by admin

My fiance bought me a 5-month old cat (American Shorthair) a week ago and they’re pretty pricey! My first night with her I had full blown allergies. I was sneezing like crazy, runny nose, watery eyes, itchy throat, slight shortness of breath, redness on face, and nonstop cough (bronchospasms). I took some benadryl which helps me sleep throughout the night. Day 1, I was little better. We didn’t let my cat go into the bedrooms and bathrooms. I only had runny nose, sneezing, and some redness on face. We decided that I should take Claritin and it did help a little where I had slight runny nose and sneezing but no redness on face. I did used Claritin up to Day 2 and we bought Allerpet to reduce the allergen that my cat produces. We also cleaned our place and vacuumed. I also wore mask when I’m close to my cat and when I pet her. Day 3 and 4, I switched to taking Zyrtec. It lessened my sneezing and runny nose. But on Day 4 my cat got sick. We took her to emergency room for animals and Vet said that she has respiratory issues and her left eye was teary and infected. They gave us antibiotic to give her. Day 5 and 6, I decided to not take any medication. My symptoms were the same as Day 4. But yesterday afternoon coming home, Day 7, I developed same symptoms I had from my first contact with my cat. I was more short of breath this time. I took Benadryl, Phenergan with Codeine for my bronchospasms, and inhaler.

I need some serious advice. I’ve tried so many things. If there’s more I need to do, I am willing to do so just my fiance won’t return my cat back to breeder. He planned on returning her tonight. He also asked his doctors from his work (He’s an emergency room nurse) and all of them said to return my cat except for one doctor who thinks I can get immune to my cat. I owned a cat 6 years ago and I was fine with him. I had him for 6 months and even let him sleep with me. I am desperate here to try anything.

I would go to an allergist and ask if your symptoms are bad enough to take allergy shots or to get a prescription allergy medication. Hope I helped!

Why would somebody born with so many allergies?

January 31st, 2010 by admin

When I was a young child I had many allergies and medical problems and still take meds for some of the problems.

Allergies: Nut’s,paticuarly peanuts, Scrambled Eggs,Cat’s,Dog’s ,legumes, mold’s,dust and feathers. Again these were diagnosed at a young age and may not all be allergic today, I am 16 now. As if you may have found this hard to belive I also had ezecma which is not that bad now. I also was diagnosed whith ashtma and I still get a inhaler every year although the ashtma was never severe and has decreased, although I notice I may have some minor problems once and a while. And to top it all off I also at age 7 was found to have a lazy right eye, 20/200 at the time. I had treatment for that and I belive my right eye recently has been tested to be between 20/30 and 20/40 depending on who did the test. I wouldn’t say these medical problems have ruined my life. I had behavior problems as a young child paticuarly before they found that my right eye was blind. Why so many problems?

I am an allergy sufferer currently doing research on the causes/treatment of allergies.

Here is my take

1.)the use of anti-biotics has exploded in recent years altering the bodies bowel flora which leads to a leaky-gut
type condition and predisposes the person to be more prone to allergies.
2.) repetitive eating is more common, repetitive eating exposes your immune system to one type of food over and over again and is a leading cause of allergies.
3.)environmental toxins, such as pesticides, some people are allergic to the pesticides used to grow the peanuts rather then the peanuts themselves, also the use of chemicals decreases the immune system.
4.)lack of breast feeding and bottle fed babies get twice the amount of food allergies, and also babies esposed to certain foods such as peanuts way to early causes allergies later in life.
5.)Certain foods do not agree with people biolgically or genetically for example most Chinese people are lactose intolerant because milk cows were not a raised mostly in China and milk was not an every day food.

What happens if im allergic to oysters?

January 31st, 2010 by admin

Im not allergic to any other sea food but i wanna try oysters right now.. should i? how do i kno im allergic? and what happens if i am? do you think i could be?

You’re probally not allergic to oysters but if you try 1 wait a little bit if nothing happens than your not allergic. If you start to feel like your throat is closing up or hard to breathe than get yourself to a hospital for an EPI Pen injection. I hope that helps you, good luck.
