Does the FDA regulate labels on food and beauty products?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: allergy information

I love the fact that labels tell you the ingredients that are in food, as well as listing the allergy information. I think this is incredibly important for several reasons, but I want to suggest that they add to the allergy information whether or not it has any animal products in it, because sometimes those labels can be INCREDIBLY long and some of the items listed aren’t necessarily recognizable as an animal byproduct. How do I put this into action?

You could write to the FDA, but the sad reality is that you will just have to research animal by-products and learn to recognize them. Then do not buy those products. It is apart of being a vegan. [assuming you are one, or an animal activist of sorts]
The chances of the FDA actually regulating your wish are slim to none.
Sorry dear.

If you are allergic to bananas and avocados, what other foods might you also be allergic to?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: allergic

My husband is allergic to the two foods mentioned above. Today, he tried papaya for the first time and had a severe allergic reaction that required an ER visit. Turns out papaya has the same compounds in it that bananas and avocados do, hence my husband’s reaction. Are there any other foods with the same compounds that we need to avoid? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

bananas, avacados, and papayas are all related to the rubber tree. There are several other foods that are related include kiwi, European chestnuts, water chestnuts and, less commonly, potatoes, tomatoes, and peaches, plums, cherries, and other pitted fruits.

More importantly, because all these things are related to the rubber tree, he is at very high risk for a latex allergy. Whether he has had a reaction yet or not to latex you night want to start treating him as though he has one.

He also needs to get allergy testing done. Your insurance should cover it, especially since he has had severe reactions.

Pet Hamster Allergy question.?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: pet allergy

I really want a pet hamster for my birthday. I cleaned my room and did all my chores but my parents still said no. They say the reason why I can’t get a hamster is because me and my dad might be allergic to it. I am severely allergic to cats but not dogs. My dad is also allergic to dogs, cats, and gerbils but not as much as I am to cats. I am willing to get an allergy shot if I need one in case I am allergic. My dad however thinks he will be allergic to hamsters since he is allergic to gerbils. The question is what are the odds my dad will be allergic to a hamster? I have been searching online but the sites say different things so I come here. Some sights say you can only be allergic to some of the bedding and not the actual hamster but some say otherwise. Oh and also will it help my dads allergies if I always keep the hamster in my room so the dandruff won’t spread because he says it probably won’t help. Please help me, I will be choosing a best answer!

The easiest and safest way to find out is to go to a doctor and get a scratch test. If either you or your your father is severely allergic to a hamster’s dander or bite, the consequences could be fatal if you go into anaphylactic shock. I have a severe allergy to bees, and believe me it is no picnic to live in fear of creatures any size let alone as small as a quarter. It is not worth the risk for you and your dad to live this way not knowing, and the simple test will give you an answer once and for all. If you or your father have only a minor allergy to hamsters, it would still be possible for you to become a hamster parent if you take the proper precautions. Allergists are not the only type of doctor who can test you. Following are other kinds of doctors who can also likely perform the skin test:

I hope your folks agree to the test. They care enough about you to not want to risk your health if you are allergic, so I would hope they would be reasonable enough to agree to the test. If they will not agree, ask for the test as a birthday gift. They will know how much this truly means to you, and you can then save up for the hamster if the tests prove it is safe.
