What are the symptoms of food allergies for a dog?

August 18th, 2009 by admin

Determining weather a dog has food allergy is difficult, you will need to call your vet and they will put the dog on a special diet and your dog can not eat anything else but this particular food. I was having the same problem with my pit and I refused to subject her to that. However, if your dog is eating out of a plastic bowl change it too stainless steel or a ceramic bowl. It may help. My pit has such severe allergies I have to give her 125mg of benadryl a day. (don’t do this unless you have consulted your Vet) as well as I have to wash her feet in a special shampoo. Talk with your vet it may not even be a food allergy it good be just allergies period.

Are these possible symptoms of a milk allergy?

August 18th, 2009 by admin

my son was on lactose free formula as it was the only one he agreed with
he was then weened to milk, but lactose free milk because im really not sure if he’s allergic to milk or not.
i’ve tried him with cheese to test his reaction but it seems every time he has cheese it’s followed with cold-like symptoms in the following days. Aka- runny nose and cough
Is this something that an allergy to dairy could cause or am I way off base?

First of all, understand that there is a HUGE difference between Lactose Intolerance and a Milk Allergy.

Lactose Intolerance is very simple to control. Simply take a lactase supplement, use lactose free versions of milk, etc. Typically, lactose intolerance will bring about gas, bloating and other belly discomforts.

A milk allergy will bring with it MUCH severe consequenses. Projectile vomiting, sweling of the lips and/or throat, hives, rashes and can be life threatening.

With lactose intolerance, it’s simply the lack of enzymes to break down the milk sugar. That’s why a lactase supplement will help. It breaks the sugar down for you. http://www.lactaid.com/page2.jhtml?id=/lactaid/health/health_1a.inc

With an allergy, the antibodies in your body see it as a harmful substance and begin to attack it in effort to kill it.

If there is a chance he is allergic, you really want to have him tested to know for sure. A milk allergy can be life threatening. http://www.lactaid.com/page2.jhtml?id=/lactaid/health/health_1b.inc

What are the symptoms of a milk allergy?

August 17th, 2009 by admin

After I drink a glass of milk, within 15 minutes my throat becomes full of phlegm and I have to keep clearing it and/or coughing. Is this a sign of a possible milk allergy? Note that it isn’t lactose intolerance; it doesn’t give me any gastrointestinal upset whatsoever.

Milk actually causes the body to produce phlegm.
An allergy to milk can result in different symptoms depending on the person. My aunt gets headaches and feels generally unwell, meanwhile my ex-boyfriend almost died shortly after birth because they didn’t know he couldn’t have milk (he would throw up, become nauseous and have an upset stomach).

Food allergies, is there a list of what foods cause what symptoms more often?

August 15th, 2009 by admin

I have a delayed food allergy, very hard to pin down what things, I know everyone is different, but a list of say "this food or pesticide has often caused this symptom" would be really helpfull.
Mine are lip itching, severe headache and hot localized welt/hive/bumps only on my face….if this sounds simular, I would like to know.

www.foodallergy.org

The 8 most common food allergies are: fish, shellfish, treenuts, peanuts, dairy, wheat, egg, and soy.

Try keeping a food diary. Write down everything you eat, what symptoms you get and when they start. Do this for several days and see if you notice a pattern.

You should find an allergist and be tested as well.
